Transforming Healthcare with AI: From Myths to Mastery

Join us for an inspiring and human-centric journey into the future of healthcare, where technology meets patient-centered innovation. In this presentation, we'll explore the expansive role of AI across a typical hospital value chain, from enhancing patient consultations to revolutionizing radiology reporting.

We'll demystify AI by tackling common misconceptions and sharing real-world experiences, focusing on the human impact rather than just the technological advantages. Discover why CAD is not AI and learn about the practicalities of AI implementation, including its strengths and limitations in triaging.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the Role of AI in Healthcare: Participants will be able to explain how AI is integrated into various stages of the hospital value chain, including patient consultations, radiology reporting, and patient history analysis.

  • Identify Key Use Cases of AI in a Hospital Setting: Participants will be able to describe specific applications of AI in healthcare, such as AI-powered radiology reading (including mammography), patient consultation, and patient engagement.

  • Differentiate Between AI and CAD in Healthcare: Participants will be able to articulate the differences between Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), and understand why CAD is not considered AI.

  • Evaluate the Human Impact of AI in Healthcare: Participants will be able to discuss the human-centric aspects of AI implementation in healthcare, focusing on patient-centered innovation and the real-world experiences and benefits for patients.

  • Assess the Practicalities of AI Implementation: Participants will be able to evaluate the practical challenges and considerations of implementing AI in healthcare, including its strengths and limitations in tasks such as triaging and prior authorization processes.

Legal Consideration for AI in Health Care

Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) is currently being implemented and projected to grow in areas of radiology (image recognition), robotic surgery, high-risk patient identification, helping pharmacological decision-making, and assisting with documentation. This technology is also currently being used with insurers and managed care organizations.

These innovative technologies have raised new legal and regulatory considerations. Areas of concern include transparency of use with patients, proper consent and disclosure, privacy and discrimination. AI has the potential to develop disparities in patient care resulting from discriminatory algorithms in systems. Healthcare executives need to understand how AI is incorporated into their system was designed and the quality assurance measures used to ensure fairness, effectiveness, and safety in output. Healthcare executive and providers alike must also know the proper disclosures regarding AI to patients including why it is being used and how it affects care. Additionally, disclosures are needed regarding privacy of patient information and measures being taken to protect this information concerns. Other potential legal considerations include malpractice concerns, reimbursement factors, and False Claims Act implications.

Learning Objectives:

  • Current AI and projected for future use in the next 5 to 10 years.

  • Highlight current AI enforcement cases with Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General, HHS Office of Civil Rights, and state level enforcement.

  • Discuss current regulatory framework on federal and state level for implementing and using AI in health care.

    • HIPAA Consideration

    • Non-Discrimination compliance with Affordable Care Act.

  • Review reimbursement requirements with federal and state healthcare programs and considerations for claims utilizing AI.

  • Discuss limitations on insurers and managed care organizations’ use of AI in prior authorizations and claims.

  • Developing a clear use case and how to develop a risk mitigation plan, especially for AI in clinical decision-making.
