My First Visit to Capitol Hill: A Journey in Advocacy by Tina Snodderly

Government Affairs News,

Last September marked a significant milestone for me - my first AAOE Capitol Hill Day. It was an experience that I will remember and one I recommend to all our members.

My journey into advocacy began with a sense of frustration towards the myriad regulations, mandates, administrative burdens, and reimbursement cuts plaguing our field. What could I do to stop these changes that could negatively impact our patients? Fortunately, I had support as a member of AAOE (American Alliance of Orthopaedic Executives) and AAOE’s advocacy council. Thus began my journey into advocacy driven by the desire to ensure that the voices of our members are heard.

Initially, the prospect of setting up meetings with my representatives seemed daunting. However, I soon discovered invaluable resources available through AAOE and by networking. With their assistance, coupled with the support of my state society, I was able to attend a series of meetings in a single day. Armed with a comprehensive mobile app providing details of senators and representatives, I researched each individual and their stance on healthcare. Familiarizing myself with pertinent bills and accompanying speaking points helped me to stay focused and articulate our concerns effectively.

High on the agenda during our visits was HR 2474, a bill that would undo the physician pay cuts and of paramount importance on the Hill that day. I researched the bills we advocated for, identifying both supporters and non-supporters. Equipped with talking points and personal anecdotes, I sought to forge meaningful connections with our representatives, reminding them of meetings back in my state where we had previously met to address similar issues.

The day itself was with coordinated time slots ensuring that our discussions with representatives remained focused on our medical field’s interests. From the early morning meetings to the late afternoon, every moment was dedicated to advancing our cause. After the meetings concluded attendees met for a debrief session.

As the day ended, I felt our groups presence along with over a thousand other medical professionals had made an impact. Together with our counterparts on Capitol Hill, we had succeeded in amplifying our voices and championing our healthcare interests.
