Advocacy Course for Orthopedic Professionals Launches
The American Alliance for Orthopaedic Executives is proud to announce the development and creation of Advocacy for Orthopedic Executives. This self-directed, self-paced series of brief learning opportunities explains the concept of advocacy, reviews the legislative process, and discusses how individuals can influence the legislative and regulatory landscape.
Engaging in advocacy on behalf of yourself, your providers, and your patients is not difficult. After all, you are the expert on topics related to orthopedic care. This course provides an overview of how to collaborate to develop legislative priorities, an advocacy strategy and communication plan.
We often become frustrated with legislative and regulatory changes that impact our profession. It's important to remember that we have the power to influence these changes. Advocacy is your opportunity to address what frustrates you and act on things you cannot accept:
“I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.”
— Angela Davis
“I cannot prevent anyone from getting angry, or mad, or frustrated. I can only hope that they’ll turn that anger and frustration and madness into something positive.”
— Harvey Milk
Taking action is your right and responsibility. We can initiate change, and we bear the responsibility to speak out for the improvement of patient care. Upon completion of this activity, the learner will integrate advocacy skills into their professional practice. Legislative members want to hear from their constituents. They want to understand how their decisions influence the lives of those they serve. Advocacy provides that opportunity.
